| When the five-story Thiesen Building was erected in 1900 in downtown Pensacola by a
successful immigrant saloon keeper, one of the first tenants was a small real estate and
insurance agency owned by L. S. Brown. In 1908, his brother, Hunter Brown, came to
Pensacola from Georgia to assist L. S. Brown in his growing business. On February 10, 1911, only three months before the U. S. Navy ordered its first airplane, L. S. Brown retired from the business and sold his interest to William Fisher, Sr., who operated the Fisher Real Estate Agency and the Fisher Insurance Agency. The two agencies combined to form Fisher-Brown Insurance. Commercial, life, and casualty insurance were just coming into their own, and the establishment of a large, strong firm representing national insurance companies of high integrity helped Northwest Florida grow strong. Fisher-Brown was thrust into a position of critical importance as Pensacola became the cradle of Naval Aviation and as new manufacturers and other commercial ventures became active in the region.
Hunter Brown established policies which dictated integrity, community service, and fairness, all of which helped create the now familiar corporate slogan: Fisher-Brown Insurance... It Pays! In 1923, Hunter Brown hired a 12-year-old newspaper boy named Dave Johnson. "I sold newspapers at the San Carlos Hotel and in the B&B Restaurant," Dave Johnson once told a reporter. "Sister Mary Delores of St. Michael's Parochial School got me started with Mr. Brown." The scrappy floor sweeper and personable mail boy became the second president of the agency when Hunter Brown died in 1955. Dave Johnson made sure that the precepts and principles set down by Hunter Brown continue today. "Mr. Brown left us a heritage of the past and an obligation to the future." At the time of his death in 1992, Dave Johnson had worked almost 70 years at Fisher-Brown. In September, 1972, Fisher-Brown merged with E. H. Crump Companies of Memphis, Tennessee. Association with this national brokerage firm helped Fisher-Brown expand its markets and enter the sophisticated electronics era. The Crump organization benefitted because it expanded their operations in the southeastern region. In 1975, Farrell Dearinger became the third president of Fisher-Brown and performed his duties with distinction during the next seven years. In 1982, a team of local employees led by Don Rushing re-purchased Fisher-Brown from E. H. Crump. Don Rushing was named president of the organization. In 1997, Fisher-Brown, Inc. formed an ESOP and named Gilbert O. Bennett as President and Alan D. Moore as Executive Vice President. In November, 2004, Fisher-Brown became a wholly owned subsidiary of Trustmark National Bank. Over 90 years the firm has shown steady, continued growth resulting from a combination of internally produced business and expanded service and product lines. Fisher-Brown remains a leader in both the insurance field and the communities it serves. |
